In the course of his remarks on the subject of faith healing, a bishop, referring to Christian Science, says, "It has brought incalculable benefit to Christian people." We are appreciative of this admission. Surely, however, he greatly errs and is inconsistent when he concludes that "the teachings of Christian Science are singularly imbecile." Obviously, teachings which are responsible for such beneficial results cannot correctly be termed imbecile. The fact is that Christian Science promotes and maintains in the lives of those who understand and practice its teachings a higher degree of sanity than is attainable through any other teaching. Its healing works, like those of Christ Jesus, are effected through the understanding that God is the divine Principle of all real being. The Apostle James said, "Shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works." Commenting upon this passage on pages 487 and 488 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "This faith relies upon an understood Principle. This Principle makes whole the diseased, and brings out the enduring and harmonious phases of things. The result of our teachings is their sufficient confirmation." The very desirable results which follow the acceptance and practice of Christian Science, namely, the elimination of both sin and disease, are increasingly in evidence; and this is the reason why Christian Science has been able to gain so many adherents.
