[Written for the Sentinel]

Communion

He who has supped with Thee may never more be fed,
Except Thou at the table sit and break the bread.
He who has tasted of Thy golden vintage, Lord,
Except the sparkling cup by Thee is poured,
Forever more must thirst.
He whose awakening heart has tasted of Thy peace,
Whose sin-bound sense has found by Thee release,
He who has seen Thee walk the wave and calm the storm,
Has watched Thy healing touch turn darkest night to dawn,
Forever more were cursed
Might he not lay his hand in Thine and say:
Lord, let me walk beside Thee all the way;
Teach me the secret of Thine ever present day.
