While a student of surgery in the Medical Department...
While a student of surgery in the Medical Department, University of Michigan, the Professor of Physical Diagnosis discovered that I had organic heart disease. He told me that I could never become a surgeon, and would not live more than three months. The case was so pronounced that he asked me to allow the students in his class to examine me for the "murmur." Twenty-five or more found the "murmur" easily. My father was the treasurer of a prominent firm of manufacturers of drugs, chemicals, and surgical instruments. To this shop came medical men from all over the country. Father had every heart specialist he knew diagnose my case. There were seventeen in all who gave the same verdict as the University of Michigan professor.
I steadily grew worse, having to take chloral in order to sleep and digitalis to stop the pain. At this point I found Christian Science, through a dear friend who had been healed by it. The practitioner, who afterwards became my teacher in Christian Science, helped me in a way that immediately interested me in Christian Science. Her application of Christian Science stopped the pain! I was under the influence of chloral when the first treatment was given, and at once came out from under its influence. That was my last dose of medicine, taken over twenty-five years ago. When the pain returned, as it did many times, I would read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and that frequently stopped it; if it did not, I telephoned to the practitioner, and always gained relief. I grew steadily stronger and less afraid, as I learned that the heart is, allegorically, the seat of the affections, mental, not physical; and as these are purified one knows himself, more and more, to be the reflection of Life.
I had previously studied medicine and surgery because I wanted to help the people in the slums of New York city. My idea was that if people were taught how to keep clean and well, there would be less crime. As a practitioner of Christian Science my dream has been realized, because Christian Science heals and regenerates as nothing else can. I am filled with gratitude.
