When I receive my Sentinel and Journal, I turn to the testimonies of healing. After reading them I think I am ready to grasp the needed information given to all of us in the editorials. The lectures to be delivered are always read; and if I can attend one of them I go with joy and return with more joy. The greatest joy, which is the source of constant gratitude in my daily experience, is the fact that my three children understand and practice Christian Science. I am grateful for the help of the literature, and for class instruction, church membership, and Sunday school attendance as a teacher.
Through the understanding of Truth gained in the daily study of Christian Science, using the Quarterly, all of our Leader's writings, and especially the Manual of The Mother Church, with our literature, including The Christian Science Monitor, we can each prove, as Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 524), that Spirit, God, does not "evolve its opposite, matter, and give matter ability to sin and suffer."
In December, 1918, our three children had influenza. The eldest daughter was not confined to the bed more than one day. When the two younger children were seemingly stricken, it seemed best to have a Christian Science practitioner come from the city. That day was the crisis with our son, nine years of age. As I stood by the bed with the practitioner and saw how ill the child seemed, I was thinking of the coming train which was to take away the practitioner; and I burst into tears of fear, as I realized I was sixty-five miles in the country, away from Christian Scientists. The friend and practitioner said, "You need a treatment," and it was given. Only those who have experienced the healing power of Truth can know what instantaneous relief is. In two hours my boy was free from pain and fever, and my joy was full.
