Signs of the Times

[James E. Freeman, Bishop of Washington, in the Herald, New York, N. Y., Jan. 6, 1924]

Jesus Christ stands before the world to-day in a more commanding position than he has ever held before. His teachings have a more responsive hearing than has ever before been given them ... Religion, rightly purveyed, not obscured by too elaborate forms nor embarrassed by too fine theological definitions, is more truly popular to-day than it has ever been. In the repeated upheavals that have shaken the foundations of the social order, it has been made clear that the one remedy that has brought the world back to sound and normal conditions has been the revival of religion through a sane preaching of the doctrines of the fatherhood of God, the saviorhood of Christ, and the brotherhood of man. These are the demonstrated and basic beliefs that underlie and secure the best in our social and industrial life. Some there are to-day who seem to forget this in their futile effort to restore a disordered and disorderly world. The very essential things of our whole industrial and economic system are secured through a recognition of ... fundamental ... religion.
