Spiritual Maintenance

The cordial invitation to use the Christian Science Reading Rooms, which is extended to the public at every Christian Science service, presents limitless opportunity for healing. Those who have been healed through Christian Science can deeply appreciate the wisdom and foresight which led Mrs. Eddy to provide this refuge from the storm, this haven from fear and distress. The Christian Science Reading Room is one of God's precious gifts to men.

Any number of specific instances may be recalled in which a visit to a Reading Room and an intelligent use of it have so illumined human consciousness that supply for human needs was subsequently realized. It was upon one such occasion that a spiritual comprehension of the meaning of the idea of maintenance unfolded itself to a student through a healing.

An overwhelming sense of physical discomfort and financial limitation prompted the student, who was a traveler, to seek a Christian Science Reading Room in an unfamiliar city, while waiting there to make a change of trains. The visitor was scarcely seated when the little card which read, "Silence is maintained in the Reading Room," arrested attention. Its loving assurance that something was being done in the Reading Room seemed to say, You do not need to struggle to quiet these clamorous arguments of a blinding headache and an empty purse; a power wholly outside of and much bigger than you is keeping for you that perfect peace which you have sought here.
