A person acquainted with the teaching of Christian Science or with the Christian Science textbook would not state that this textbook was the "Christian Science Bible," unless there was behind the statement a motive to misrepresent and to prejudice the public against Christian Science by attempting to make it appear that Christian Scientists either use no Bible at all or else use a different Bible from the one used by the other churches. It is well known that the King James Version, the Bible commonly used in churches everywhere, is the Bible used by all Christian Scientists and the Bible used at every Christian Science church service. The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is exactly what its name indicates—a Bible commentary which is a "key" to the spiritual import of the Holy Bible. There are many commentaries on the Bible that are in use by ministers of all denominations, and each one is valued according to its worth as an aid in interpreting passages of Scripture. However, no one thinks of speaking of a commentary as a Bible. To assert that the Christian Science textbook is the "Christian Science Bible" is unjustly to infer that Christian Scientists are not Bible students; while it is a fact that a very large majority of the membership of the Christian Science church were formerly members in good and regular standing of so-called orthodox churches, and they are to-day more earnest students of the Holy Bible than ever before.
