About twelve years ago Christian Science was brought...
About twelve years ago Christian Science was brought into our home. We were a large family of ill, discouraged people. I was in a deplorable state, both mentally and physically. After continued treatment for tuberculosis, I was finally told by the best physicians in the Johns Hopkins Hospital that they could do nothing to relieve me, and that I would steadily grow worse; so each day seemed a weary round of morbid existence to be lived through somehow.
The study of Christian Science was taken up for the healing alone, because I loved the form of religion I then had, although it had never satisfied my yearnings for peace. Christian Science healed me, not rapidly, but steadily and surely. Through the study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and all of Mrs. Eddy's other writings, together with the loving help of practitioner and teacher, I gained a higher understanding of God and a greater sense of joy and freedom than I had ever thought possible. From being dependent and weak, I grew, through some knowledge of the power of God, divine Mind, to realize strength and courage and to fill the days with useful activity. I became a nurse, and was able to go through long periods of difficult work. Every need has been met, mentally, financially, and physically, and each member of the home has gained freedom. Not long ago, in order to take up some work in which I was interested, it was necessary to undergo a medical examination. This was accomplished without any unfavourable comment, and though for a long time previous I had been conscious of my healing, I was glad to have it verified by those who thought it impossible.
I have witnessed the healing of nearly every disease known to the medical profession, supposedly curable and incurable, contagious and otherwise, through the right application of Christian Science. I am very grateful for all these blessings, which are the outward manifestations of the spiritual insight Mrs. Eddy has given to us and to all humanity—the ability to know God aright as the ever present divine Principle which governs and controls, and also to know man as God, who is "of purer eyes than to behold evil," knows him.—(Miss) Anna Elizabeth Verleger, Baltimore, Md.
