In the early part of 1907, I attended my first lecture on Christian Science. At that time I was suffering from stomach trouble and had been constantly under a physician's care, following strict rules in regard to diet, for over ten years. Several months before attending the lecture, I had been told by a physician that nothing more could be done for me. During the course of the lecture reference was made to the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The next day I obtained a copy of this book from the public library to see if I could get an idea of Christian Science as a religion. The chapter on Prayer appealed to me so strongly that I read it many times; and as I read the other chapters in Science and Health and could not understand some of the statements, by going back and reading the chapter on Prayer I came to understand them better.
After reading the textbook in this way for about two weeks I noticed that certain ailments, which had always caused me great suffering, had left me entirely. I then decided to give up all medicine and depend on Christian Science; and while it was several months before all of the distressing conditions disappeared, yet I knew that if I kept on reading and studying Science and Health I should be healed—and I was. I did not know anything about Christian Science at that time, so did not know there were practitioners to turn to for help.
While I am deeply grateful for the many healings I have had during the past fifteen years, I am more grateful for the knowledge and understanding of God that has come to me through the study of Science and Health and the other writings of our revered Leader.
