Signs of the Times

[Ivan Melville Terwilliger, in the Christian Advocate, San Francisco, Calif., Feb. 21, 1924]

If God is everywhere, can we doubt that where He is, there He will reveal Himself? Since "the heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handy-work," dare we say that God has not been heard from since the New Testament was written? ... There is no conflict between the Word of God in Christian religion and the Word of God in science. Science does not deny God. Rather is it based upon His continuous activity. ... Creation is His fact. Science endeavors to verify His method. Read the meaning of the word "evolution" in Webster's dictionary! Evolution does not mean that man descended from a monkey. Evolution means "development," a progressive unfolding. ... Christianity is the fact of the progressive, gradual revelation of God, and personal alignment with its culmination in Jesus Christ. Christianity and progressive development are as harmonious and inseparable as the inside and outside of a cup. For all Christians believe that there is a future, ... which, as yet unattained, is nevertheless the goal of life. Therefore God's evolution of His creation is a fundamental corner stone of the Christian faith.
