One of the many things for which I am very grateful is the understanding of God's true nature and character that Christian Science has given me. One of the old theological teachings that had been instilled into me was that God sent evil as well as good, using evil to punish us for our sins.

My little girl was born with paralysis of the bowels; and every day was a day of misery, and every night a thing to be dreaded. She did not eat or sleep properly, and consequently did not grow. Medicine, massage, and other material means gave only temporary respite. For about two years she had such an existence that life seemed little worth while. In my ignorance I blamed God for the whole matter.

At that time another member of the family, who lived in a large city, was healed of very serious ailments by Christian Science and came to visit us. That started me thinking that if she had been healed, surely the little child could be; so I sent for the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I expected to be able to read that book and grasp it with ease, as other reading was done; but after reading six or seven pages I was dismayed, for I could not understand any of it. I threw the book aside; but the sight of the unhappy little girl caused me to take it up again with the determination to read slowly and carefully, accepting what I could and patiently waiting to understand what I could not then see. I read and read, silently and aloud, so that the child could hear also. Little by little the words "God" and "Love" came together like parts of a picture falling into their rightful places. The child grew better, and was healed. Although that occurred fifteen years ago, I have never forgotten the lesson of patience and perseverance. She is now a strong, well girl. I can see that the old mistaken teaching in regard to God and a belief in material intelligence were the two stubborn beliefs that had to give way to the understanding of divine Love, who doeth and knoweth all things. I have been healed through Christian Science of a severe attack of erysipelas, in less than two weeks, missing only three days from my work. I was also healed of blood poisoning.
