Christian Scientists are taught to leave every one free to pursue the course he thinks is best in order to gain what every one should truly desire,—namely, a correct understanding of the nature of God and man. They have no longer any doubt that the will of God is always good. It is, however, "by works a man is justified, and not by faith only." Christian Scientists follow in the footsteps of the Master, Christ Jesus, and are learning through his teaching, by the light which Christian Science throws upon the Bible, progressively—according to their consecration and obedience—to do the works which he promised should follow them that believe. Christianity, unless it is healing by purely spiritual means, without resort to material means of any sort, in the words of James, "is dead, being alone." On page 135 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy defines it as follows: "Christianity as Jesus taught it was not a creed, nor a system of ceremonies, nor a special gift from a ritualistic Jehovah; but it was the demonstration of divine Love casting out error and healing the sick, not merely in the name of Christ, or Truth, but in demonstration of Truth, as must be the case in the cycles of divine light."
