[Original poem in German]

Love

Be loving to others, though they be ungrateful,
God's faithful reflection can never be hateful.
Cast down every idol with firmness unfailing,
Let nothing dissuade thee from error's unveiling.

There is no escaping the meshes so blighting
Of self-love and envy, in slander delighting,
Save patiently, meekly, with loving forbearance,
Uprooting, destroying, each evil appearance.

And God's loving presence makes lighter each trial,
And lifts thee yet higher, o'er each self-denial,
Until thou dost clearly His likeness supernal
Reflect to each one in His kingdom eternal.
