Soon after I began reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I was exposed to diphtheria; and the disease manifested itself not long afterward. Then I was very much frightened, not only for myself, but on account of our two young children; and as it was night, and we had no telephone, I could not call for help. The thought then came, Now is the time to prove what can be done by reading Science and Health. So I began reading and applying what I read to my need. Many times the condition was so painful I had to walk the floor, declaring the truth as best I could, and always with the thought that when morning came I would send to the nearest telephone and call a practitioner,—and then I would be healed. I had been afraid to go to bed on account of the danger to my children, but finally did so, declaring that if God could heal me He could also protect them. The Lord's Prayer and the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) were repeated many times, and I finally fell asleep. When morning came I was perfectly healed, and very happy and grateful for my first demonstration.

During the influenza epidemic in 1918, I was suddenly stricken. I was healed in one treatment. A few weeks later, I fell and broke two bones in my left arm, but was healed in a few treatments, so that I could do my work. I did not have the bones set, for I had seen proof of mental surgery in the removal of an abnormal growth, and I knew the Word of God is "quick, and powerful." I have been helped in many ways through the reading of the textbook.

Our eldest son was healed of a very severe case of typhoid malaria. That was surely a testing time, for the "last enemy" seemed very near several times. We had to do our own work, as well as have a practitioner; and I am sure if we had not, the healing would not have been accomplished in such a short time; for it was just a month from the day he had the first treatment that he returned to high school, perfectly well. He has had many other healings, some of them instantaneous, others requiring more time.
