While realizing that, as we are told on page 3 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, "Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks," I feel that I owe it to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and to my fellow-man to tell of the wonderful blessings that have come to me and mine through the study of Christian Science.

Some years ago, I found myself at "man's extremity," physically, financially, and mentally. At that time, I was examined by a specialist for a disease which he pronounced incurable except by a surgical operation. My wife also had been unsuccessfully treated by doctors for a nervous condition that seemed more than likely to terminate fatally, in addition to having suffered from valvular heart trouble since childhood. Instinctively, we seemed to be reaching out for a form of relief which materia medica and other human agencies had failed to furnish. It is therefore not surprising that when Christian Science was first brought to our attention, we immediately decided to try it. It is even less surprising, at least to those who have made a study of this Science and felt in part its healing efficacy and regenerative influence, that our physical ailments left us almost instantaneously. From the very first day that a copy of Science and Health entered our home, all drugs and medicines of every description were thrown out, never to return.

The other benefits received are too numerous to mention. Our financial condition has improved; innumerable physical maladies have faded "like dew before the morning sunshine" (Science and Health, p. 365) when confronted with the truth about God, man, and the universe as taught in Christian Science; and we have learned to watch and pray for the Mind of Christ and enjoy to some extent the peace and joy born of a knowledge of the dear Father's loving-kindness. Every minute of every day is fraught with blessings from above and with heartfelt gratitude and devotion to God; and to Jesus, who taught us the Christ, Truth; and to that unselfish, God-ordained gentlewoman, Mrs. Eddy, through whose consecration to God and brotherly love the mission of Jesus was interpreted aright, and the lost art of healing by prayer restored to mankind.—Augustus A. Stanhope, New York, N. Y.
