It is now eleven years since I first heard of Christian Science, and during that time I have turned to Science upon all occasions when I have needed help in one way or another. At first, when I thought of giving my testimony, I wondered how I should be able to describe in words all the horrors and hours of terror that I have passed through. Now, when with sincerity and gratitude I can say that I have been lifted out of the darkest hell into light, quietness, and peace, my difficulty is to find words to describe all the good that Science has given me during these years. In a home previously filled with sickness, lack, and sorrow, everything has changed into health and harmony.

It was for my mother that I first sought help in Christian Science. For twelve years she had been suffering from a serious mental disease, which the physicians pronounced incurable. At that time, however, I did not understand that I was likewise in great need of help. It was not until after several years that any real improvement was noticeable in my mother's case, but once begun, it went on rapidly, and every one who now sees my mother says her healing is a perfect wonder. It was when I myself first began to realize and understand man's spiritual origin and coexistence with God that the darkness began to yield.

My own healing also has come gradually, in proportion to my understanding; although I acknowledge with gratitude the fact that upon several occasions I have received marvelous instantaneous help through the work of practitioners. I was indeed not so ill as my mother, but the nervous system was out of order. I took medicine for everything,—for sleep, appetite, and digestion, as the bowels never acted naturally. I always carried bromide in my pocket, and used it on all occasions. I smoked quantities of cigarettes; but all of this left me immediately, without difficulty, and I never felt any temptation to use medicine after I began to study Mrs. Eddy's book.
