In the summer of 1917, about a week after our National Guard Unit was called out, I was taken with a severe cold. It grew rapidly worse; and the experiences of army life, being so new to me, aggravated the condition from week to week. I continued with the army routine, but it became very difficult to do so. Any violent exercise would cause me to cough to so great an extent that I could hardly do the strenuous drilling of those early days of preparation. After spending a few weeks in California, we were sent to North Carolina. When I reached there, I was hardly able to talk above a whisper. Worse, however, than the physical condition was the mental condition, due to many humiliating experiences, which were very hard to bear; but the physical condition had become so severe that those in charge of the physical well-being of the company became very solicitous for my health, and wanted me to go to bed and "doctor up." I then had to take my stand and tell them frankly that I relied upon God alone for healing.

A loving, helpful Christian Science practitioner was working for me through all this. One day a letter came from her. One line stood out and fairly burned its message into my thought. It was this: "That is pride—out with it." There were several lines drawn below that word "out." When the realization came upon me how true her rebuke was, I felt clearly, beyond possibility of a doubt, that I was healed. It was three or four days before the manifestation was complete; but at the end of that time I was absolutely free of every vestige of the complaint.

Great growth in understanding followed this experience. I look back upon the weeks immediately following this healing as among the most illumined of my life. It seemed that this test was the try-out, as it were, for my whole army experience. Because the stand was taken decidedly with Truth right at the beginning of these seemingly hard army-life experiences, all such subsequent experiences were quickly and easily disposed of. In fact, from that time on, during eighteen months of service in the United States and in France, many times undergoing severe hardships, there was never a morning when I was not able to report at reveille; so I was never required to visit the medical officer. There were several problems to be solved, but each time this was quickly done when the truth was applied. Opportunities for helping others presented themselves, all of which made me even more grateful for the truth in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
