"Go forward"

It has been said by some incredulous ones that the Christideal of Christian Science is too high to be attained here on earth. When we prayerfully study and follow the direction of God's law, as revealed to us from day to day in the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, we cannot fail to assimilate a little here and a little there of the Christ-Spirit; and we are then able proportionately to part with our erroneous beliefs. After a time, in looking backward over the path of consecrated endeavor we have been climbing, we marvel at the progress we have made. This discovery encourages us to go humbly forward, overcoming material obstacles and having many precious experiences on the way.

When Moses and the children of Israel came to the Red Sea, and their passageway was seemingly blocked with high mountains of materialism on either side, with the waters before them and the Egyptian army closely in pursuit,to material sense it seemed that the inevitable destruction of the Israelites must follow. But "the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward." Moses was obedient to the voice within; and in time the Red Sea parted and the children of Israel went over on dry land. This is one of the many pictures given us in the Bible which depict our own experience in what Mrs. Eddy calls (Science and Health, p. 566) our "passage from sense to Soul."

As the children of Israel through the Red Sea safely, and must have rejoiced in their deliverance, we too rejoice when we have made a demonstration over a seemingly difficult problem, and are so uplifted that we believe that never again shall we doubt the power of God. But as the children of Israel, after their deliverance, murmured against Moses,so are we tempted to murmur over the next problem that confronts us. Many of us, no doubt, have had the experience, after having had a very harmonious hour or two in studying the Lesson-Sermon in the privacy of our room, of coming forth uplifted and then meeting face to face a chilling situation which would attempt to rob us of this beautiful revelation of good. Let us remember that at that very moment we are equipped with the necessary armor to defeat this Goliath of material sense, and are only being prepared for a further step higher. Moses said to the Israelites, "Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever."
