Christian Science came to me about ten years ago
Christian Science came to me about ten years ago. I had never heard of that healing method before, and was very unwilling to believe in the works of Jesus the Christ. First I said I could not study "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, because I knew no English at that time; but this excuse could not stand, as I was told of a German translation of the textbook. I began its study, but was very obstinate and denied the miracles of Christ Jesus; for my husband had been a modern preacher, and our opinions of our Saviour were quite different from what Christian Science teaches. But there came a moment when I thought: Let me honestly try it, put off the eyeglasses which I have worn for more than ten years, and try to demonstrate the verity of what Mrs. Eddy writes on page 586 of Science and Health: "Eyes. Spiritual discernment,—not material but mental." I denied that matter (an eyeglass) was my light, and affirmed that eyes are spiritual, and that I therefore could see by the light of divine Love. I shall never forget my joy and happiness as suddenly I could read very distinctly the smallest type. This was not a complete demonstration; but that moment was sufficient for me to see the truth, and I was convinced of its healing power. So all my false views of Jesus yielded to the declarations of Christian Science; my faith in the mighty works which he accomplished through his understanding of Love, God, grew step by step into understanding, and I was very happy in the study of Christian Science.
In this way I lived many years, gave my time to reading the textbook and studying the Bible Lessons, and felt I was changed by the love of God. One day I was confronted with a great difficulty. I could not think as I ought to do; I could not study Science as before, and that was my greatest distress. I would not return to the help of a doctor; and on the other hand could not help myself in Science. So I asked for treatment from the friend who had introduced Christian Science to me. I thought I was passing on. The treatment was given with so much kindness, patience, and love that gradually I recovered, and had faith again in the one God, good, and lost my fear. This was a great healing, as I had been so fearful that I could not even go out alone.
I cannot be thankful enough to our heavenly Father-Mother God that I can know the truth and understand better than before how God alone is our help in need, and how only Love can free us from the belief in the reality of sin, sickness, and death. I can see the way now and give thanks to our great Way-shower, Jesus the Christ. It is the Science of the Christ or Christian Science that enables us to demonstrate God as the only cause of all good. I also am very grateful to Mrs. Eddy, as she has blessed all mankind by her pure love and obedience to God, and has given us in Science and Health the way to learn and demonstrate the healing power of the Christ. Also I thank the editors of and the contributors to our periodicals; and am grateful for the lectures, which have been a great comfort to me; and for the love, patience, and time this friend and practitioner gave to me.—(Mrs.) Magdalena Helper Sesbrugger, Lochem, Holland.
