Beauty

Beauty is omnipresent for those who have eyes to see it, because the real universe is spiritual and perfect. Mortal eyes have never really glimpsed it; only spiritual sense can discern God's creation. In his first epistle to the Corinthians Paul says: "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God."

The writer will never forget a wonderful healing she once received from the above-quoted words. She had been in deep mental distress for many days. At the time she was interested in Christian Science, and had attended a few of the Christian Science services. On a particular Sunday the world seemed indeed very dark; and the burden of life appeared almost greater than she could bear. She entered the church, searching and praying for truth and light. The atmosphere of quiet and peace which prevailed brought comfort. Then the beautiful solo began with the words, "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." Instantly, the darkness and terror left her, the light of Truth poured in, and Love lifted her above the troubled waters of mortal thought into a sense of peace and comfort; and life, instead of being dark and hopeless, became full of beauty and praise. The goodness of God became living reality to her.

All are hungering and thirsting after beauty; but only as we turn our faces wholly to Spirit, seeing the nothingness of matter and the allness of divine Mind, do we behold real beauty, which is the expression of Love's presence, bringing the peace that "passeth all understanding,"—the sense of God's eternal tenderness and nearness. Thus He maketh us to "lie down in green pastures: ... beside the still waters," and to rejoice in the eternal power of good over the belief of evil,—sickness, sin, and death. When we reach this state of consciousness we shall see beauty everywhere, and reflect it in our lives.
