The Lectures

Oakland, Calif. (Fifth Church).—Introducing the Rev. Andrew J. Graham, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, Mrs. Vivian Borneman said in part:—

In the Bible we read that the children of Israel were fed by manna for forty years in the wilderness. With the light that Mrs. Eddy has thrown on the Scriptures in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," we learn that "wilderness" may be defined as a state of consciousness. On page 597 of this book we read as part of the definition: "Spontaneity of thought and idea; the vestibule in which a material sense of things disappears, and spiritual sense unfolds the great facts of existence." In Webster's New International Dictionary the word "manna" is defined as "divinely supplied food; spiritual nourishment." The study of Christian Science teaches that Truth is the food that sustains us, and the understanding of Truth is indeed the manna which comes down from heaven. Mrs. Eddy saw the need of a hungry world; and having proved Truth to be substance, labored untiringly to feed the multitude.
