Christian Science is not merely a system for curing...

New Outlook

Christian Science is not merely a system for curing bodily ailments. It is founded on the fact stated in John's gospel: "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." Christian Science is teaching that God can be known as ever present Life, Truth, and Love, knowledge and understanding of which heal spiritually as well as physically. The cures in Christian Science differ from the cures by material medicine, or those generally known as faith cures, such as at a shrine like Lourdes, or by a particular person, as a hypnotist or mesmerist, in that Christian Science cures do not depend on place, thing, or person, but on the understanding of God, the divine Principle of all that really is. You do not have to go to any person, or be at any particular place, or use any material thing to cure a mistake in arithmetic, all you require is to know (understand) the truth about the mathematical problem, and that knowledge corrects (cures) the mistake.

The knowledge which effects cures in Christian Science is that "God is love," that He made all that was made, and that "it was very good," and that "God created man in his own image." This is the record of the Bible, on which Jesus based his healing work. Christian Science teaching is the same practice, as shown by Mrs. Eddy's remarkable, epoch-making book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I will conclude with the following quotation from "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 2): "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science. It is only the bugle-call to thought and action, in the higher range of infinite goodness. The emphatic purpose of Christian Science is the healing of sin; and this task, sometimes, may be harder than the cure of disease; because, while mortals love to sin, they do not love to be sick."
