After I had refused for years to have anything whatever...

After I had refused for years to have anything whatever to do with Christian Science, which I had never looked into at all, it was lovingly presented to me by a neighbor in time of great need. Even then, however, I was not ready to accept it without once more trying what the doctors had to offer for insomnia, extreme nervousness, constripation, and headaches, from which I had suffered since earliest childhood. The physician to whom I went was honest enough to tell me that drugs would not help me; so I turned to Christian Science. After the first treatment given by the practitioner whom I visited I slept like a child; the awful sense of nervousness disappeared; the headaches became very infrequent, and were quickly overcome. Also, upon leaving the practitioner's office, I found myself breathing through my nostrils for almost the first time in my life without the use of an atomizer or similar treatment.

In 1918 I was taken with influenza; and on Christmas eve I was unable, in my partial delirium, to tell those caring for me my sister's name or address. I had planned to spend the holidays with her, but arose on Christmas morning so weak and ill that I could scarcely stand. With the help of a Christian Science practitioner, however, and accompanied as far as the junction by the friend who had cared for me, I started, she helping me to the other train. My sister had been telephoned to when my though was clear enough to give the necessary information, and her husband met me at the second changing place, from which point the trip was made by trolley. There was steady improvement as the morning advanced; and I ate dinner with the family, enjoying the visit very much.

In an attack of diphtheria, in which it seemed to me that I was passing on, a practitioner came to my home, and the healing was instantaneous. The sense of gnawing pain seemed just to go out in receding waves, and health and strength to come surging in. It was the most wonderful experience I ever had, and one which I shall always gratefully remember, especially for the spiritual uplift received. This call for help was made in the late afternoon. On the following morning I arose and prepared breakfast for the nurse and myself, she laughingly inquiring what she was there for. I assured her that she was very welcome; but that as I was absolutely well, I did not intend to be waited upon.
