Church of England Messenger

The spiritual world is the real world, and in it there is no sin or suffering; but mortals seem to suffer and sin; and sin, so long as it is believed and indulged in, is punished. One of the Tenets of the Christian Science church reads: "We acknowledge God's forgiveness of sin in the destruction of sin and the spiritual understanding that casts out evil as unreal. But the belief in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts" (Science and Health, p. 497). As regards suffering, on page 460 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, it is stated: "Sickness is neither imaginary nor unreal,—that is, to the frightened, false sense of the patient. Sickness is more than fancy; it is solid conviction." Christian Scientists find, however, that by applying God's law, the law of Truth, wisdom, and Life, they are able, in proportion to their understanding, to bring out the results, as Jesus promised, of victory over sickness, disease, decay, ugliness, and prove the ultimate achievement of good.
