I am very thankful to Christian Science for even the slight knowledge of the truth I have gained, and for the help I have received. A Christian Science practitioner, who was making regular calls at our home, requested that I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, that my changed thought might benefit another member of my family. I read perhaps twenty pages, but to me it was just as "dry" as the Bible, and so I did not care for it. The practitioner asked if I would consent to have treatment, as it seemed necessary to change my thought. I replied that I did not care, but I did not know of anything I needed to be healed of, as I was in perfect physical health and always had been.
Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says that "the healthy sinner is the hardened sinner" (Science and Health, p. 404); but I did not realize that truth at that time. However, I received treatments. I do not know how many—it may have been one or a dozen. This I know,—that in two weeks I noticed that many things I had been in the habit of doing I had ceased to care for and former associates became undesirable. I began to read Science and Health and could see something in it. Since then I have made the Bible and Science and Health my daily companions.
The first physical healing that came to me was of a severe cough and sore throat. I called for help from a practitioner, and the throat trouble vanished immediately. Two days later, when I arose, the cough was so severe it seemed as if I should have called the practitioner, but being so early I decided not to. I started to study the Lesson-Sermon, and before I had read two sections I was entirely healed. Since then I have had many healings. My hand was badly lacerated as a result of being bitten by a vicious dog, but was healed perfectly in one week without medicine, although the pound master said it should be cauterized.
