One Sunday morning in 1915, I told my parents that I was going to a Christian Science church in New York to hear a noted singer, who was the soloist there. My parents were much surprised, and told me that I should neither understand nor care for the service, to which I replied, "Well, I can sleep until the solo, and leave immediately afterward." I was never a churchgoer, and the Bible was a closed book to me. I shall always remember that Sunday; for, instead of going to sleep during the service, I listened with rapt attention to the truth that was poured forth. I had found the religion for which I had been searching.
My occupation was that of medical nurse. Despite all that I had heard and learned, I listened to the argument that the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, would take my means of livelihood from me; where upon I determined to try to forget Christian Science, so that I could continue in my profession.
In one of our hymns we read, "Sow thy seed, be never weary." The seed had been sown, and when, two years ago, I became truly convinced that Christian Science was the religion for which I had been longing, I gave up my profession and took up earnestly the study of Christian Science. My physical healings have been numerous. A scalded foot was healed instantaneously; as well as bilious attacks, headaches, and colds. But the healing for which I am most grateful was not instantaneous; a period of eighteen months was required to accomplish the work. Owing to a motorcar accident, a tumor developed in my breast. The best available medical opinion said the condition would have to be removed by surgical means. Many times, when the pain was intense and the breast swollen to nearly twice its normal size, I wavered, fearing that, after all, I should be obliged to submit to an operation. When the way was almost insurmountable, the words of a hymn helped me very much:—
