In July, 1918, I bought my first copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Before this, through many years of tribulation, worry, sickness, and pain, God had been preparing me to lay down my self-willed belief in mortality, and to accept the true idea of spiritual existence, as revealed in Christian Science. I had cried out to an unknown God for guidance in a particular problem, and received an answer, unwelcome to my sense, but which showed me conclusively that there is a God who answers prayer. Then came the search for light; and I was led by devious ways to the place where Christian Science was presented and accepted. After this, my progress was rapid. Nervous trouble of over fifteen years' standing, with its many accompaniments, was completely overcome long before the textbook was read. Material remedies were dropped. I was able to resume a normal life, a state of activity unknown for years.

On page 66 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "Trials are proofs of God's care;" and I can with heartfelt gratitude look back on the years when trials so beset me to drive me into the land of peace, which I found. After the first healing, I came into touch with the small band of workers in this field, and had the great privilege, about fifteen months later, of helping to organize and work for our society. During these years I have had many healings, including fallen insteps, varicose veins in my feet, a painful form of skin disease which recurred many times, but has now ceased to trouble me, the tendency to severe attacks of influenza, ptomaine poisoning, and other ills. Other members of my family have had healings almost too numerous to mention, two of which were a stricture and quinsy, instantaneously destroyed.

Financial limitation has been overcome; and I am gradually eliminating serious faults of character, such as an irritable temper and a habit of personal criticism. But the two things that are most wonderful and glorious to me are, first, the new outlook on life, the sense of security and peace, where before all seemed doubt, darkness, and distress; and secondly, the priceless privilege of being able to reflect the healing Truth and Love which destroy the ills and woes of our neighbors, as well as of our faithful friends in the animal kingdom. All along the way I have been so helped, cheered, and guided by divine Love that my life has been one long joy, with only short spaces when discouragement seemed to creep in; and I have proved daily and hourly that divine Love does meet every human need. So far, only one member of my family has accepted Christian Science, but all have had proof of its efficacy for me, and some for themselves. Worldly things have quietly and naturally dropped away as more serious work claimed my time; and I know that the way is opening to still higher duties and joys.
