It was in 1901 that I learned to know, beyond possibility...

It was in 1901 that I learned to know, beyond possibility of question or doubt, that Christian Science is true. My health since then has been in every way better; in fact, the period spoken of has been a record of freedom from illness of any description. But I think it has been easier for me to believe that I could be healed physically than morally; yet my paramount need was for moral regeneration. So the work has been slow. Thanks to constant study of Mrs. Eddy's books, however; to attendance at church services and the study of the Lesson-Sermon; to the privilege of taking some part in the church activities; and last, but not least, to patient, loving, and persistent help given to me, the progress has been sure. In the meantime, experiences such as the following have come to me by way of proof that Christian Science heals.

On one occasion I was badly bitten by a frightened cat, the animal's teeth meeting through my thumb nail and the thickest part of the thumb. My mental declaration of the truth concerning supposed accidents or injuries, that they are unknown to the divine Mind, was made instantly. No material steps were taken to relieve the apparent pain resulting; and as soon as thought could be fixed in Truth the fear of possible or probable poisoning was denied vigorously. There was no rest for me that night; and in the morning I was told—and the appearances were much in favor of the assertion—that I was "in for a very bad hand." I had not asked, and did not ask, for help; but that afternoon I told a Christian Science practitioner what had happened, and consulted her as to whether I had been dealing rightly with the situation. I was assured this was the case. From that instant the pain left me, and the discoloration and swelling went down with phenomenal rapidity. Two days afterwards I was able to wear a tightly fitting kid glove without discomfort. It was, however, six months before the marks entirely disappeared.

Another time, I fell backwards down a flight of stairs, my left ear striking a projection at the bottom of the banister and my head striking the wall on the right-hand side. Some one ran out to say, "Are you hurt?" to which I promptly answered, by voicing the spiritual truth in preferenced to the material lie; but to human sense the pain experienced in my ear was beyond anything I had ever known. For the next few hours it was difficult to speak or eat; but such time as was available I gave to studying Christian Science and so correcting my thought. About midnight, though with little hope of sleep, I went to bed. I slept soundly, however; and when the morning came, there was no more pain, and not the slightest external evidence of any sort that anything had happened.
