Christian Science was offered to me in the spring of...
Christian Science was offered to me in the spring of 1902 by some one who had just become interested, and had come on a visit to the village where I was then living. I was having medical treatment at the time, with very little relief; and I was told that Christian Science could heal me. At first I thought it must be a kind of faith cure, and I felt it could not help me. I had been an active worker in the Wesleyan church for a number of years, and religion was more to me than a name. I found comfort and help through the study of the Bible; but I felt all the time that there was more spiritual help to be gained from it than I had already received. I was, therefore, looking into other religious teachings to see if they had more to offer, but I found nothing that appealed to me as giving more than I had, until I started to read a Christian Science Sentinel, left by the friend already mentioned. As soon as I began to read, my attention was held, and I was convinced that at last I had found the truth. I read the whole Sentinel through; and I can never express the joy it gave me. I was astonished to find that the reading had not caused great pain in my eyes. It had been almost impossible for me to do either reading or sewing for some months past, even with the aid of glasses which, about eight years before, a specialist had ordered me to wear, saying that it would be fatal to sew or read without them.
When I told of the joy it had given me to read the Sentinel, the friend lent me "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I found it was indeed a "key" to the Scriptures. I knew it was a revelation, and I could scarcely leave off reading. Truth was feeding "the famished affections" (Science and Health, p. 17). I saw that my concept of God had been wrong; and that was the reason my prayers for healing had never been answered. Christian Science brought God nearer to me. I saw not merely theoretically, as in the past, that God is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient; and I was conscious that this spiritual fact was a practical truth that would destroy sickness and pain. I began to use this truth, and healing was the result.
From girlhood I had suffered from a severe form of neuralgia, the attacks lasting from a week to a month at a time; and during these times it was impossible for me to lay my head on a pillow unless I used a bed rest. This was all overcome through the study of Science and Health. I was quickly able to leave off glasses. All pain went from my eyes, and the sight was clearer and stronger than I could remember it to have been before. For about sixteen years after that, I had not the slightest difficulty with them. Insomnia was also overcome, and other minor ailments.
