On page 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, one will find the question, "What is the scientific statement of being?" The answer is accepted as fundamentally true by all Christian Scientists; and they are proving the truth of it. It reads thus: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual." This shows that what is temporal is no part of real, permanent existence. It seems to be real only as a mirage seems to be real to the traveler. The main object of Christian Science is to lessen evil, disease, and death; and its followers are proving that they can overcome these beliefs only as they understand their nothingness and the allness of God as omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent.
