Mrs. Eddy has proved, and enabled others to prove, through her scientific Christian discovery, the seeming influence of mesmerism or hypnotism, obtruding itself on the attention of mortals in all generations, to be mental illusion, the result of false conclusions, a product of man's wisdom, which is "foolishness with God,"—a product of the carnal, mortal, fleshly mind, which "is enmity against God." As the effect of an error in mathematics disappears when the correct application of the rule is made, so the effects of the errors of a mentality apart from the one and only infinite divine Mind, God, disappear as we know the truth that sets us free. It may be recalled how Saul was misled by it through the witch of Endor; how Isaiah warned those of his time against using it in enchantments, sorceries, through astrologers, stargazers, and monthly prognosticators. Jesus summed up all its seeming effects as "the works of the devil;" and he set the example for all time in destroying these same works. So to-day, that one enemy of the human race—the belief in some influence or power other than omnipresent God, good—tries to deceive even "the very elect" by news names,—psychotherapeutics, mind science, new-thought, mesmeric and hypnotic control, spiritualism, and so on.
