It is with an earnest desire to help some one who may be...
It is with an earnest desire to help some one who may be struggling with sickness or sorrow, as well as from a deep sense of gratitude for good received, that I send this testimony. I first began reading the Christian Science Sentinel some twelve years ago. It was given me by a neighbor who was fully aware of our great need. I was always eager for the new copy, reading the articles with much interest, but above all for the pages given to testimonies, as I was searching for something that would fit our case, as I then thought.
Previous to reading the Sentinel I was prone to think of Christian Science more in a humorous strain than any other. Realizing fully there was authority in the Bible for the healing work accomplished through Christian Science, still I felt it almost blasphemy to try to do the works of Christ Jesus. My thought soon changed, however. I got possession of an old copy of Science and Health and tried to read it, but, as I could not understand it, returned it and continued reading the Sentinel for two years. During this time the desire came to us to go west for change of climate. We did so; still no relief came, but it was then I began the earnest study of Christian Science, not for myself but for a loved one. The waters in the next few years seemed dark and deep, but I can truly say that Christ hath stilled the tempest; the "Peace, be still" has been spoken, and I am at peace. This peace of mind, this surcease of mental agony, the healing of grief, is the one thing for which I can never be too grateful. During this trying time a friend, who is a Christian Scientist, helped me step by step until I could walk alone.
Personally, and in our home we have had many beautiful demonstrations over the ills of the flesh. The error which caused me most suffering was headache. Sleeping or waking I seemed conscious of a pain in my head, often accompanied by great distress of the stomach. This error was slow in yielding but has been overcome, and if it tries to talk is quickly silenced. I have not used any material means for about ten years and, while I am most grateful for all benefits received, words cannot express my gratitude for the rule of Principle, as given to us in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, by which to work out our problems as they present themselves—something tangible, something we can apply every moment of the day. Unbiased study of Christian Science inevitably enables one to see that it is the pure, unadulterated teaching of Jesus the Christ.
