Christian Science is in truth our warmth in winter and...
Christian Science is in truth our warmth in winter and our shade in summer. This was proved to me twelve years ago when I was healed of a severe attack of nervous prostration, through the loving ministrations of Christian Science. I had been ill for many years, and had sought healing in several sanatoriums. For months I had not know what it was to sleep. Double doses of sleeping medicines seemed to have no effect. I became melancholy over the thought that I could not conduct my household, or cope with the educational problems which confronted me.
In my darkest hour the message of Christian Science was brought to me. I immediately dismissed my doctors and nurses and went to a Christian Science practitioner. I told him my tale of woe, which seemed very real to me at the time. He introduced me to a God who is Love, a loving heavenly Father, who had not sent this affliction upon me, and assured me that because God had not sent it I did not have to keep it another moment. It seemed to me that I was receiving for the first time something for which I had been hungering and thirsting all my life. The practitioner then handed me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and told me to read it while he was treating me. I had never seen the little book before, and knew nothing of Christian Science treatment. I did not know what prayer in Christian Science was, nor what the gentleman was doing who sat opposite me with closed eyes; but I did know one thing—a wonderful peace had come over me, which has never left me during all these years. When I went into that office I was very anxious to die and when I left I wanted to go home to live and be a real wife and mother. That night I slept like a baby, and the next day was able to resume my duties—a new woman.
I read the little book for three days and late into the nights, and proved the truth of the Bible injunction, "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace." As I sat reading, my husband said to me, "Do you know what you are reading?" I answered, "No; but I do know that I no longer want to jump out of that window, and I want to know what did it." I soon learned that it was the Christ, Truth, that had healed me, and when I found that God's law of healing was contained in the Bible and explained in the Christian Science textbook, I made up my mind to study these books faithfully so that I might be able to do for others what had been done for me. Instead of problems, household and educational duties are now considered opportunities to prove the allness of God, good. Christian Science is teaching me how to be a better wife, mother, housekeeper, home maker, neighbor, and friend.
