That I have much cause for gratitude for Christian Science...
That I have much cause for gratitude for Christian Science the following account of my introduction thereto will show. On account of having what the family doctor called a delicate constitution I was always more or less ill. I tried everything in the way of medicine and foods and tonics but all to no purpose. Then I tried other means of relief and was helped for a time, but after about a year, to my great disappointment, all the old troubles returned, including sleepless nights and days of pain due to rheumatism. Then such serious symptoms set in that I was told an operation must be performed as soon as possible, but this verdict threw me into such a state of fear and weakness that the doctors were afraid to operate. Another kind of treatment was therefore tried, but at the end of two months there was no change for the better and all arrangements were made for the operation.
Just then a letter came from a Christian Scientist to whom I had written, giving me a list of practitioners. I immediately wrote back saying that it was too late because I was in the hands of doctors and was to undergo an operation within a few days, but added that if she could help to free me from the dreadful fear I had and the strong conviction that I would never come through the ordeal alive, I would be grateful. On the following Monday I received a letter saying she would help me and that though the operation seemed a very real and near thing to me, there might be no need for it by Wednesday, the day set for the operation. There was no time for further correspondence, for the doctor came twice the next day. I rested, however, in the thought that some one was helping me, although beyond that I knew nothing about Christian Science. The next morning after examining me the doctors said there was a wonderful change and they had decided not to operate. I was almost jumping out of bed with joy and excitement and immediately asked for a pad and pencil to write the good news to the practitioner, who afterwards, when the doctors were dismissed, treated me until I was stronger and able to be about.
I then, at the doctor's request, allowed him to examine me again, and his words were, "Well, it is marvelous! That manifestation has disappeared and you never need worry over it again." Years later in complying with the law I had to be examined by another doctor. A relative present told him of this former trouble and he seemed surprised and said, "Well, there is no trace whatever of it now." After such a result of Christian Science treatment I at once got the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and began the study of Christian Science. Although the understanding of it has come very slowly, I have always been helped and strengthened in every trial. As for the literature, I love every word of it and am deeply grateful for everything in connection with Christian Science.—(Miss) Kate Luffsmann, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia.
