Evil Causeless

One of the most insistent demands of humanity is to know the cause or origin of discord or evil. From the standpoint of absolute Principle as taught in Christian Science we find that God, divine Mind, is the only cause and creator of all that is. Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 207): "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause." Since God is infinite good, there can be, in reality, no place or being for a cause or origin for good's opposite, evil. Thus in the light of divine Science, evil, having no cause or origin, has no reality, no real existence, and to strive to discover the cause of evil is to attempt to establish a self-evident impossibility, the reality of unreality.

In the same sense that light destroys darkness, does Truth uncover error and reveal all seeming evils to be but illusions of mortal belief, a false and mistaken sense or claim of reality. A complete understanding and realization of the allness of God instantly destroys the illusion of evil, and its manifestations vanish from human experience. On page 390 of Science and Health we find, "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony." Here we see clearly that it is ignorance of Truth that makes unreality appear real. We all readily agree that ignorance is not of itself an entity but is merely absence of knowledge of the truth, and is as powerless to resist the truth as darkness is to withstand the presence of light. If lack of right understanding of God produces the illusion of evil, to human belief, then its most simple remedy is spiritual awakening to the unchanging truth of being.

This is an important lesson for us to learn who have set out upon the heavenward journey out of materiality, to overcome in consciousness all claims of evil and discord. Having accepted the teachings of Christian Science as our guide, the mystery as to the origin or cause of evil no longer hampers thought, thus delaying the day of victory. We are wise indeed to know, when apparent discord or an evil condition would attempt to deceive us, that there is no real cause whatever for it, but that the illusion only points to our ignorance of the right understanding of God. So let us calmly and fearlessly turn away from seeming discord to consecrate our thoughts and hearts anew to God, the divine Principle of our being, to receive a greater and fuller realization of the infinite allness of good, that the right understanding of Him may restore harmony.
