Signs of the Times

[Chicago American]

The Christianity of to-day is a failure only so far as we fail or refuse to accept and apply its principles to daily life and our relations one with the other. What the world needs is a convincing argument that it would be better off if right were the determining factor in all human relations. The minute a man concludes that justice and decency are profitable, so soon will he be just and decent. The thing to do then is to make justice and decency profitable. That cannot be done with war. It cannot be done by bowing down to and worshiping the individual who has grown rich on the want or suffering of others. It cannot be done by applauding and elevating greed, which never loves its neighbor as itself. Christianity is a state of mind. It is an attitude of soul. That one chooses not to adopt and apply it—if the whole world chooses to ignore it and its teachings—does not and cannot affect either its reality or its potency. Jesus did not think Christianity was a failure, and the unresponsiveness of the people did not discourage him. No more should it discourage those who are seeking to foster and promote it now.
