Among the Churches

Current Notes

Ontario. —The press has manifested a very fair spirit during the eleven months to October 1, 1919. Very few erroneous statements about Christian Science have been published in the newspapers of this province, apart from reports of sermons which contained misrepresentations. The newspapers in which the matter appeared, almost uniformly published the corrections submitted by the committee. The number of attacks in denominational papers showed a satisfactory decrease. Twenty-five letters in all were written as replies, of which only four were entirely unpublished.

On December 2, 1918, four members of the Ontario Cabinet heard representatives of the various schools of medical practice regarding a proposed definition of medicine. As Christian Scientists were also invited to state their views on the subject, I. F. Hellmuth, K.C., as our counsel, ably presented our position: that we are not practicing medicine but healing by purely spiritual means, that we are law-abiding citizens, careful to observe the regulations regarding the reporting of contagious diseases, and worthy to exercise our religious freedom and our practice of healing by prayer.
