In 1910 when we were living in the West my husband was taken ill with a severe pain in his foot. The doctor said it was rheumatism and admitted there was no medicine that could cure it. We therefore asked for help in Christian Science and in a month my husband returned to work. During this time I read to him from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and the more I read the more amazed I became at its logic. I had been brought up in very strict fashion, and had finally broken away from all so-called orthodox religions, since they failed to answer my questions. I glanced into theosophy and occultism, but quickly realized no correct answer could be found in mystery of any kind. I was fairly familiar with the Bible; but reading it together with the Christian Science textbook I quickly began to understand much that had before baffled me.

I was intensely interested and read a great deal after my husband had been restored to health. When our first child was born the doctor declared only a miracle had saved me from an operation; but I knew that the faithful work of a Christian Science practitioner had supplied strength and demonstrated the might of God over so-called mortal laws. This little daughter was healed of infantile paralysis when but two years old, through the power of Truth. Her small brother was completely cured of bowel trouble. Mumps, chicken pox, measles, colds, sore throat, and whooping cough have been perfectly overcome by Science. The children have never had medicine and have attended the Christian Science Sunday school exclusively. The effects of accidents have been quickly—sometimes instantaneously—Every day brings its blessings.

My husband and I have had the great privilege of class instruction and of membership in The Mother Church and branch churches. We have had hard lessons to learn but are thankful that we can turn from evil and see that God's children are loving and honest; and when this is seen, there remains no bitterness, no resentment, to impede further progress. The lessons I learned during class instruction came back to me at a time when I was alone and struggling to breathe, unable to rise from my bed and walk to the telephone. It seemed as if the end of mortal life had arrived, but slowly I ceased to struggle as more and more I recalled those lessons, until finally peace was established and pain was gone.
