Chattanooga (Tenn.) News
From an article in the News recently, it appears that a lady critic has vigorously attacked her erroneous concept of Christian Science, while indulging the belief that she was attacking the real thing. Setting up a man of straw and labeling it "Christian Science," she proceeds to tear it down, which would be a right and proper thing to do if Christian Science taught some of the things which she charges against it. The main trouble with critics of this kind is that they arrogate to themselves greater wisdom or greater honesty than the many thousands of Christian Scientists who are perhaps just as capable and just as honest as the average critic.
The difficulty lies in the fact that so-called orthodox religions attempt to interpret Scripture from both a spiritual and a material basis, while Christian Science squares everything from the spiritual basis only.
Christian Science is Christian because it accepts the whole teaching of the Master, Christ Jesus. It is science because it demonstrates by an exact rule the practicability of the Christ-method in every possible avenue of life. It accepts not only the command to heal sin, but also the equally binding command to "heal the sick." It does not regard religion as a haphazard thing of the emotions, but dignifies it by making it practical and provable. The Bible is the foundation stone of the Christian Science movement, and, in the wonderful light thrown on its meaning by that great Bible commentary, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, it has become to tens of thousands of the sorrowing, the sick, and the sinning a vital, living influence of to-day instead of being merely a musty chronicle of a dead past.
