When Christian Science was first brought to my notice in...

When Christian Science was first brought to my notice in 1915, I had just come out of a hospital, where I had been treated for a complete nervous breakdown. I had been treated to understand that if I hoped to find relief from this trouble I must fight it myself, through will power, and that I must have "a more optimistic view of life," but this seemed impossible. I had no near relatives, was lonely, poor, scarcely able to work; and I was so unhappy that it hardly seemed worth while to struggle against such seemingly overwhelming odds. I had been brought up in an orthodox church, but had completely lost interest in it, although I had not ceased to pray in the only way I knew. God seemed to be very far away, but in my extremity I turned to Him for help, knowing that I could do nothing myself. The life that I had been trying to live had proved a failure, and I had no wish to live for myself any longer.

It was not long after this that Christian Science was brought to my notice. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy was lent to me, and I began to read it. From the first moment it seemed as if a door leading to a new and better world had been opened for me, and I read eagerly as I had never read in my life before. I had no thought of the healing which Christian Science had to offer, but wanted to know God. Jesus said, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." I soon realized the fulfillment of this promise, for after reading Science and Health I found to my joy that I could eat anything I wanted without discomfort. I had also been healed of severe headaches and biliousness, which had troubled me since childhood, and other ailments were fast disappearing. Needless to say, I began to be happy and grew stronger every day. I had found the "optimistic view of life," but it was not the old life—not material, but spiritual the life that is "hid with Christ in God." It had not been will power that had brought me such peace and joy, but it was seeking to know and to do God's will which had wrought the miracle.

I have no words that can adequately express my gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me. It has revealed the power and loving-kindness of God; it has taught me that He is ever present, and that where He is there can be no evil of any kind, for He is All-in-all. It has healed me of many doubts and fears, of physical weakness and seeming lack of supply. One by one I find the problems of my daily life solved in a beautiful way.
