The assertion by "V. N. S." in a recent issue, that Christian Scientists...

The assertion by "V. N. S." in a recent issue, that Christian Scientist reject Christ Jesus and his teaching for a "belief in Mary Baker Eddy, the inventor of Christian Science," is so utterly contrary to the fact that I conclude it must have been based upon a rumor spread by some uninformed or unfriendly critic. In the first place, Christian Science is not an invention at all, it is a discovery of the spiritual law or truth by means of which Christ Jesus healed the sick and forgave sin. Christian Science, therefore, instead of rejecting Jesus, accepts in toto his teaching and practice as being in accordance with unchangeable spiritual law, applicable to all conditions of life for the purpose of correction and salvation. It follows that Christian Scientists honor Christ Jesus as no others can honor him who do not understand the law of his commandment and teaching: "Heal the sick," and, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." And they rejoice in his commandments as no others can who do not accept such works as a necessary part of Christian duty to-day and who give him only personal worship and homage.

There is only occasion for great rejoicing that the signs of healing which Jesus said should follow "them that believe," are following the teaching of Christian Science all over the world, in the degree that it is understood; and the time has gone by when anyone can successfully hope to hide his own shortcomings in this respect by attacking a religion that proves itself true to Jesus' teaching in precept and practice. The critic's speculation as to the personal return of Jesus would seem to be needless, inasmuch as he himself says that upon his return Jesus will give the same law that he gave before. His law has remained for every one to follow, and we have no assurance that those who will not believe in his law now, would do so upon viewing his personality. The study of law, as anyone knows, leads away from personality; and Mrs. Eddy invariably directed the attention of her following away from her personality to the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," and the law which revealed the operation of that Mind. "Truth," wrote Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 174), "is revealed. It needs only to be practised."
