All Are Students
In attempting to explain to some one unfamiliar with Christian Science what it is in our simple Lesson-Sermon that holds the wrapt attention of great audiences, I have sometimes felt the lack of a word to express it definitely. To-day I looked over a large auditorium and saw the faces of men and women turned toward the Readers, wearing a look of intense interest. I tried again to express in a word the difference in their viewpoint and that of the average large church audience. Presently I realized that the word I was hunting for was our familiar one of "student." These were all students. That explained at once the look on every face, eager, thoughtful, analytical, humble, and sometimes glorified.
The best listeners on any subject are those who are seeking to grasp the lesson that is being given out. Of all the studies that are pursued, scientific studies—propositions that will prove—are the most absorbing. Christian Science is the Science of sciences,—the study of man and his relation to God. The textbooks for this study are the Bible, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and Mrs. Eddy's other writings. Students of Christian Science go to church to learn more of this wonderful Science, which they have discovered can be demonstrated every day.
Every line of the Lesson-Sermon contains valuable information as to how these Christianly scientific demonstrations may be made more effectually and more speedily. How much more reason, then, for going to church and listening attentively then if one were just being entertained, or salving one's conscience with a duty performed. Christian Science is the practical religion of the world. Christian Scientists are students seeking to learn from the great Christ-teacher the demonstrable truths that will solve each individual's problems.
