Just before I left England for Canada in 1911 a sister...
Just before I left England for Canada in 1911 a sister told me about Christian Science and gave me a copy of Science and Health. I little thought then that this book would become my dearest possession. In addition to this, the literature was sent to me regularly and always read, not in the expectation of receiving healing but simply because I was interested. Soon I found my health much improved.
Seventeen years had been spent in trying to find relief from neuralgia in the head. To sense the pain was intense. Eleven doctors and specialists were consulted and massage and electrical treatment tried. Finally I was sent to Switzerland for six months. I certainly worked hard to regain health but even with all this care was often obliged to take to my bed. I am thankful to say I was healed through reading Science and Health and was greatly helped by the articles in the periodicals. I have also found much comfort from our hymns. I can now eat anything with impunity. Influenza was a yearly visitor, always keeping me in bed for at least ten days and it would be three months before I was entirely over it; but the first attack after I came into Science was overcome in one day and there has been no return. An abscess in the ear was quickly healed but it left me deaf in that ear. Three weeks later, while studying the Lesson-Sermon, I found I could hear the clock tick in the next room. Many other beautiful healings have been experienced; burns, cramp, poisoned hand, and irritation at noises have been overcome.
Far above the physical healing is the spiritual understanding one gains through the study of Christian Science, and the totally different outlook on life. I could not live our life on the prairie without it. I am most grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her loving perseverance in working to show us how to help ourselves in spite of the opposition she had to contend with. For all our literature and for the great privilege of being able to help others and for membership in The Mother Church, I am also grateful.—(Mrs.) Flora Hartshorne, Neosho, Saskatchewan, Canada.
