McBain (Mich.) Chronicle

It is unfortunate that a speaker at a recent patriotic meeting should have so far forgotten the laudable purposes of the gathering as to have criticized the religious beliefs of others. It is particularly regrettable that his attack should have been directed against Christian Science, for there are no more loyal people in the country to-day than the Christian Scientists. They have from the first supported the war in every possible way; they are in every branch of the service, and have aided the Government liberally as individuals and through their church organizations in the various financial undertakings necessitated by the struggle. The activities of the Christian Scientists in war relief were started during the very first months of the war, and camp welfare work commenced soon after the United States made its war declaration. This work is in progress and is constantly increasing as the needs become apparent. In these activities upwards of a million and a quarter dollars have been expended, every penny of which has come from the Christian Scientists either individually or through their churches and societies. There have been no drives for funds, no solicitation, no public appeal. Contributions have entirely voluntary, and every need has been promptly and willingly met. In addition to these activities the Christian Scientists are maintaining over seven hundred Comforts Forwarding committees through which creature comforts are furnished to the men in service and to those in need in the devastated districts.

Founded wholly on the Bible, Christian Science conforms strictly to the teaching and example of Christ Jesus. In its spiritual interpretation of the Bible, Christian Science has made available to mankind that understanding of God and His relationship to man and the universe which replaces sickness with health, sin with righteousness, and discord with harmony. In the same manner and by the exact method so successfully employed by Christ Jesus in the first century, hundreds of thousands of persons in bondage to disease, sin, and sorrow have been restored through Christian Science to health, holiness, and happiness. Other thousands to whom the Bible had always been a closed book have, through the study of Christian Science, made it their daily companion. Christ Jesus said, "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them," and surely a religious teaching capable of producing such fruits cannot be called harmful.
