The Lectures

New York, N. Y. (First Church).—Virgil O. Strickler, lecturer; introduced by Campbell MacCulloch, who said in part:—

Not long ago, during the course of an interview, one of the prominent attorneys of this city told me that in his opinion the affairs of the country—and in fact of the world at large—were being more and more influenced by the practice of Christian Science. He went on to say that he knew little of the teachings of Mrs. Eddy, but he was certain that the presence of many thousands of right thinking people endeavoring to apply the fundamentals of Christian Science to their daily lives must have a radical effect for good upon any community, and that in his opinion the moral changes that have swept the country of late years were due largely to this influence.

The recent passage by the Congress of the United States of a national prohibition amendment is but another indication of the influence of right thinking upon the conscience of the land. Largely the work of Christian Science is the building up and improvement of character, and the gradual elimination of all diseases and discords from the human consciousness and the body politic. On page 348 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has said, "I have never supposed the world would immediately witness the full fruitage of Christian Science, ... but this I do aver, that, as a result of teaching Christian Science, ethics and temperance have received an impulse, health has been restored, and longevity increased. If such are the present fruits, what will the harvest be, when this Science is more generally understood?" Christian Scientists believe that national prohibition is one of the fruits of this harvest, with many more in prospect.
