The teachings of Christian Science are based entirely on the Bible. Before becoming a member of any Christian Science church, the applicant must subscribe to six tenets, the first of which reads as follows, "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life" (Science and Health, p. 497). In accordance with instructions contained in the Manual of The Mother Church, by which all branch churches are governed in such matters, the children in the Sunday school must be taught the Scriptures, and their first lessons include the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, and the Sermon on the Mount. Teachers of adults are directed to enjoin their students habitually to study the Scriptures. In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says (p. 547), "The Scriptures are very sacred. Our aim must be to have them understood spiritually, for only by this understanding can truth be gained."

From her earliest childhood Mrs. Eddy was a devoted student of the Bible, and for three years preceding her writing of Science and Health she searched the Scriptures and read little else. Instead of Christian Science being destructive to the faith of many in the Bible as the word of God, as claimed by our critic, thousands testify that the study of Christian Science has given them a living faith in the Scriptures.
