My desire is to share with others the good that has come...

My desire is to share with others the good that has come to me from the study of Christian Science. I had never been a thorough student of the Bible, only reading it occasionally and especially the New Testament; but I revered it because my early teaching had been that it was the Word of God and that I must believe it whether I understood it or not. This blind belief and faith were not very satisfying, and as my daily problems grew and there seemed to be no answer, I finally began to investigate Christian Science.

My first reading of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, seemed rather laborious on account of the new vocabulary it required me to become familiar with; but I was greatly impressed by the beauty of language and thought and the choice of words; also by the various subjects discussed with freedom and authority. The chapter on Prayer revealed to me the God I had long sought, and true communion with Him became an inspiration. Here was encouragement for every right thought and desire, and a rebuke for every wrong thought; but most wonderful of all, I learned the way to get rid of the wrong thought. Many writers had brought to our attention the evil of the world, and certainly we could see far too much of it ourselves, but no one before Mrs. Eddy had shown us how to get rid of it.

While this was occupying my thought, glasses that had been fitted for my eyes on account of an injury to one of them which had caused a great deal of trouble, were put aside almost unconsciously, and my eyes were used in close work from eight in the morning until twelve at night with no bad results. Chronic bowel disorder, catarrh, lumbago, colds, and sick headaches from which I had suffered almost every other day since starting to go to school, disappeared, and I began to prove something each day of the truth of being. The realization that this law of God which I was learning about was lessening the seeming power of evil throughout the universe, and that now the brotherhood of man could be seen, brought a sense of gratitude and happiness which surpassed everything else; and a greater desire to live and reflect this truth—this Comforter which Jesus promised he would send to us—became uppermost in my thought.
