[The Christian Advocate]
The search in the files of European diplomacy for adequate reasons for this fearful war has failed to yield altogether satisfactory results. The resort to distorted and deluded interpretations of apocalyptic scripture on the part of some pious souls has produced chagrin. The easy way in which others throw the whole wretched matter back upon God and say, "It had to be," opens the way to absurdity and ridicule.
But why? That is the question that will not down, and that oppresses the hearts and depresses the spirits of multitudes of good men and women in all the world, and especially in the lands that are involved in this dreadful debacle of civilization....It is hardly fair to pile up against God the vast accumulation of responsibility that clearly belongs at the door of men who profess to be the children of God and followers of Jesus Christ, while furnishing to the world the surest evidence that they are neither.
