Before coming into Christian Science about nine years...
Before coming into Christian Science about nine years ago, I could not see anything bright before me in a physical way. In all the years from childhood I had suffered from stomach trouble, sick headache, and bowel disorder. I had tried everything physicians could offer, but only found temporary relief. This condition had blighted much of my happiness as a child and threatened to do the same in womanhood. Christian Science was presented to me several times, but the "good news" fell on dull ears, until my little daughter who had been in the Christian Science Sunday school a little more than a year expressed a desire to be taken to a practitioner, as she was not very well. Needless to say, I was the one for whom the work needed to be done. Treatment was begun, and I started to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, with the result that I was instantaneously healed of the bowel disorder. The headaches grew less severe and finally disappeared. The stomach trouble was the last to yield, but belief in heredity, as well as criticism, condemnation, hate, and many other thoughts which were not conducive to health, had to be destroyed with the understanding and application of God's perfect law of love and harmony, the same law which Jesus so thoroughly understood that he was able to raise Lazarus from the dead and give sight to the blind.
For years I was a member of an orthodox church and thought I knew God, but after studying the Christian Science textbook in connection with the Bible, I found I was constantly breaking the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." I believed in gods many. I believed matter governed me instead of God, Spirit, Mind; I believed food could both give me strength and make me suffer. I cannot express enough gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for the definition of God as given in the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 587), and for the healing articles that come to us through the pages of the Sentinel, Journal, and Monitor, just at the right time, when we seem to need them most.
Now I am well and happy and daily trying to give of this truth that has been so freely given to me. All these blessings have come to me by knowing God as revealed to me in Christian Science.
