Our Problems
In order to deal rightly and effectively with what we term our problems, we must know and consider what the world at large is thinking and doing, for the inharmony and suffering one seems to experience is but his acceptance of the world beliefs. Freedom to work out the Science of being will be found in the realization of this statement: "In Christian Science, man can do no harm, for scientific thoughts are true thoughts, passing from God to man" (Science and Health, p. 103).
Today the world seems to be in the throes of hatred, sorrow, sin, disease, and want, more intense than has ever before been witnessed. This does not indicate, as some would believe, an increase of these phases of error, nor a failure on the part of Christianity. The mortal belief of fear, hate, and sin has always been just what it is today, but the Science of Christianity has brought more clearly to the comprehension of the world what these errors are, and has made more apparent the supreme need of the world today, — a practical application of the understanding of God as Love.
If any who have accepted Christian Science as their guide seem to have an unusually heavy burden to bear in spite of their increased efforts to be right, it is not reason for dismay, doubt, or despair; rather is it a time for rejoicing, because they have not in reality an added load to carry, but, having accepted a higher standard of living, they more clearly discern the error which has always interfered with human progress. On page 96 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes: "This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace." We must therefore ask ourselves which side we are taking mentally. Are we on the side of "discord and dismay," or are we on the side of "Science and peace"? We are apt to be mesmerized by the arguments of animal magnetism, and thus led to believe as the world believes. Let us strive to overcome this belief of mortal attraction, instead of trying to apply the rules of Science merely to rid our bodies of physical discomfort. There is no sick man to be made well; what needs correction is the human belief about God's creation.
